During our exchange with Andrew St Episcopal School, thanks to Culture and Solidarité’s generous funding, we had the great opportunity to watch Clyde’s at the Studio Theater in Washington DC on Thursday, March 16th 2023. This play was written by Lynn Nottage, a famous African-American playwright and was performed for the first time on November 23, 2021. This is our review of the play. In Clyde’s, Nottage explores the theme of redemption, as many of the characters were released from prison, such as Letitia, Rafael and Jason.

They are offered a job in a food truck selling sandwiches and they each develop their own recipe for the best sandwich, under the supervision of Montrellous. However, the owner of the food truck, Aduba, is a cruel woman who manages her business with an iron hand and refuses to feel happiness in her kitchen.

We found that the staging was really interesting

because the audience didn’t have the same point of view. Thus, our vision was more focused on one of the character’s perspective. Moreover, as Aduba appeared from behind abruptly, it created fear in the spectators’ minds. Plus, we found it wonderful the fact that we were able to smell the food that they brought on stage. In the end, they decide not to rebel against her, but to make her understand what could happen if they truly leave. They left her a sandwich, one that they feel is perfect, and we are on the edge of our seats as we think that there is a moment of hesitation from Aduba. She observes closely the sandwich and throws all our hopes behind by smashing her cigarette in it. We liked the characters but we wished that the end was more explicit because we still wonder what the cooks are going to become. Yet, we liked their humanity, the fact that they formed a family and helped each other because they had all gone to the same thing : prison. Also, Clyde, the chef is difficult with her cooks, she is a dynamic character that creates rebounds throughout the play. Plus, it also unites the character upon fear which makes them closer.

Lors de notre échange avec le lycée américain, St Andrew’s Episcopal School, nous avons eu la grande chance grâce au financement généreux de Culture et Solidarité de voir Clydes le 16 mars 2023 à Washington DC. Cette pièce, nommée Clyde’s, a été écrite par Lynn Nottage, une dramaturge afro-américaine célèbre, et a été jouée pour la première fois le 23 novembre 2021.

Dans Clyde’s, Nottage explore le thème de la rédemption, car de nombreux personnages ont été libérés de prison, comme Letitia, Rafael et Jason. Un emploi dans un food truck leur est offert, vendant des sandwiches et développant chacun leur propre recette pour le meilleur sandwich, sous la supervision de Montrellous. Cependant, la propriétaire du food truck, Aduba, est une femme cruelle qui gère son entreprise d’une main de fer et refuse de ressentir le bonheur dans sa cuisine.

Nous avons trouvé que la mise en scène était vraiment intéressante parce que personne dans le public n’avait pas le même point de vue. Ainsi, notre vision était davantage centrée sur le point de vue d’un des personnages. De plus, le fait qu’Aduba apparaît brusquement de derrière la scène a suscité la peur dans l’esprit des spectateurs. De plus, nous avons trouvé le fait de pouvoir sentir l’odeur de la nourriture qu’ils ont apportée sur scène merveilleux. Finalement, les employés de Clyde’s décident de ne pas se rebeller contre elle, mais de lui faire comprendre ce qui pourrait arriver s’ils partaient vraiment. Ils lui ont laissé un sandwich, qu’ils jugent parfait, et nous sommes sur le bord de nos sièges car nous pensons qu’il y a un moment d’hésitation de la part d’Aduba, qui a nié les sandwichs offerts par les employés pendant toute la pièce. Elle observe attentivement le sandwich et anéantit tous nos espoirs en y écrasant sa cigarette. Nous avons aimé les personnages mais nous aurions aimé que la fin soit plus explicite car on se demande encore ce que vont devenir les cuisiniers. Pourtant, nous avons aimé leur humanité, le fait qu’ils forment une famille et s’entraident parce qu’ils sont tous passés par la même chose : la prison. Aussi, Clyde, la

chef est difficile avec ses cuisiniers, c’est un personnage dynamique qui crée des rebondissements tout au long de la pièce. De plus, elle unit les personnages avec la peur, ce qui les rend plus proches.
